The Story Behind Peanut Freedom
Living life with a peanut allergy changes everything for kids and parents. Many people do not understand that the result of peanut contact or ingestion is not sneezing, wheezing or an upset stomach. Exposure to peanuts can result in anaphylaxis, which is life threatening if not immediately treated.
Founded by parents of a child with a peanut allergy, Peanut Freedom is dedicated to establishing a universal, credible, quickly identifiable way to recognize “Peanut Free” products. The current standard is to check food labels. For parents of kids with peanut allergies, checking labels is a habit. But for people who aren’t familiar with peanut allergies, checking labels is an after-thought, even when buying products for a school event or kid’s birthday party.
Peanut Freedom is devoted to working with food manufacturers, schools and parents to establish an easier way to recognize peanut-free products. Whether buying packaged food, or baking ingredients, the Peanut Freedom Seal of Approval makes grocery shopping easier and safer.
At Peanut Freedom, we don’t hate peanuts. Our mission is not to outlaw peanut butter products. It is to raise awareness of ‘safe’ products for people with a peanut allergy. Unfortunately peanut allergies have risen approximately 18% over the past 10 years, and we need to do everything we can to keep our kids safe.
Currently, the FDA only requires manufacturers to highlight when peanuts are one of the ingredients in a package. That means it is “optional” for manufacturers to state if the product was made in a facility that may be exposed to peanut allergens via shared equipment or airborne contamination. Peanut Freedom will work with manufacturers to certify that their product is in fact PEANUT-FREE and will proudly endorse those products. As an independent organization, the Peanut Freedom Seal of Approval adds credibility and peace of mind to a worried population of parents with peanut allergic kids.
We envision a world where people can walk down the grocery aisle and quickly know which products are Peanut Free, based on identification of the Peanut Freedom Seal of Approval. For manufacturers, this certification will have an influential impact on consumer’s buying behavior, especially when deciding between commodity products like cereal, baking ingredients and snack foods. For people who know of someone with a peanut allergy, they would quickly choose to buy the pretzels or chips that are Certified Peanut Free, regardless of past buying habits.
We hope you see the benefit of Peanut Freedom to make for safer schools, parties and future for our children.
